The Handsome Family plus support
Sunday
17th May 2009
The Tron Theatre
63 Trongate Glasgow
|
|

If ever there was an essential
Americana band, then The
Handsome Family could
confidently lay claim to such
a title. Brett and Rennie
Sparks have enjoyed great
critical acclaim for their
recording output and eighth CD
“Honey Moon,” now
released, gloriously
celebrates their 20th year of
marriage.
The Handsomes are well known
to Glasgow audiences who
delight in the duo’s
murderous, macabre and ghostly
tales all penned by Rennie and
buoyed by Brett’s dark mix
of wayward country, blues folk
and rock. Their sizeable
following relishes their out
of kilter approach where
nothing is predictable apart
from the enjoyment of uniquely
combined talents.
“Genius” - Mark Radcliffe
BBC Radio 2
They will be joined by a
secret special guest.

Nashville-based
Otis Gibbs makes a
welcome return to
Glasgow. Lauded by the
likes of Billy Bragg,
he sings sharply
observed songs as his
latest CD release
“Grandpa Walked A
Picketline”
highlights.
Last time in town in
December 2007, he
opened for Sam Baker
and enjoyed a rousing
reception. Definitely
should be filed under
the “don’t miss
category.”

hard-bitten rural folk
will be much taken

Her
third
independent
release
“Belmont”
has gathered
lots of praise
since entering
the Euro
Americana
Radio Chart at
No 6 - and
it’s been on
the CDBaby.com
bestseller
list for
months.
Annie’s
songs are
described as
tough and
tender,
telling
stories of
hope and
struggle with
refreshing
feel of
honesty and
grit that
spans the
decades. Being
compared with
luminaries
such as
Lucinda
Williams and
Gillian Welch
shows what a
major talent
she is.
