Nuala Kennedy Band plus special guest AJ Roach
An unmissable night of nu-folk entertainment in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Celebrating her new CD Tune IN released on Nashville's Compass Records,
Nuala Kennedy is a traditional singer and flute player whose music sparkles
with originality and passion. Her all-star band comprises Iain Macleod (ex-Shoogelnifty) on mandolin, Mike Bryan (Treacherous Orchestra) guitar, Donald
Hay (Unusual Suspects) percussion, and Mario Caribe (Moishe's Bagel).
Their music is a mixture of emotive Scottish, Irish, and contemporary
composition, played at times with heartbreaking clarity, and spontaneous wild
abandon. Described variously in the press as 'stunning traditional music with a
twist' Maverick Magazine, ‘Adventurous and Absorbing’ **** Scotland on Sunday
and ‘A Picaresque Adventure’ **** The Irish Times, it's traditional music for
today's hipsters as well as yesterdays folk revolutionaries. There is more info on
Nuala at www.nualakennedy.com and live clips at
www.youtube.com/nualamusic
AJ Roach is a New York based singer songwriter hailing originally from the
Appalachian Mountains. He has a fantastically ancient and gripping voice
and is an award winning songwriter. You can check out more about him

NOTCH LINE-UP OF O’BRIEN AND DREVER FOR
GLASGOW
Grammy
Award winner Tim O’Brien returns to Glasgow
on May 20 for a show at
St Andrews
in the Square, The Fallen Angels Club has announced.
And,
on a first class bill, he will be joined by the increasingly
popular Scottish singer/songwriter, Kris Drever.
Nashville-based
Tim is one of the most influential singer/songwriters of recent
times with a vibrant musical career that has spanned four decades
and over 20 albums combining folk,
americana
and bluegrass.
The
multi-instrumentalist won his Grammy in 2007 for “Fiddler’s
Green” in the Best Traditional Folk Album category and
had a new solo record "Chameleon" out the following
year.
“Tim
has a big following in
Scotland
who will be delighted to have another chance to hear him play,”
said Kevin Morris of The Fallen Angels’ Club.
Kris
Drever, who
is one-third of the award-winning folk band Lau, released his
second solo album, “Mark the Hard Earth” in March.
“Like
Tim, he’s a popular performer so we think this is a cracking
double bill,” added Kevin Morris.

NEW
TIME OF YEAR FOR
GLASGOW
AMERICANA
FESTIVAL
The
fourth Glasgow Americana Festival will be staged in the
autumn for the first time, over five days at venues throughout the
city. Since its launch in 2006, the highly popular festival has
been held in May and become a firm favourite on
Scotland
’s music festival map.
But
organiser, Kevin Morris of The Fallen Angels Club, has
announced this year’s event will go ahead in October for
organisational reasons. “It will be a good time of year for the
Festival, a musical boost before we head into the dark days of
winter,” said Kevin.
“A
festival in October gives us more time to prepare and I can assure
you some top names are going to be added to our festival
roll-call. Discussions are well under way and acts will be
revealed in due course.
“Reaction
to the Glasgow Americana Festivals has been hugely positive and
I’m pleased there is already interest in this year’s.”
Over
the past three years, the Glasgow Americana Festival has attracted
leading lights from the new country, roots and
Americana
scene including Mary Gauthier, The Wailin' Jennys, The
Handsome Family, Robbie Fulks,
Crooked Still,
Jason Ringerberger and Kinky Friedman.
DARDEN
SMITH
SET
FOR
STATE
BAR SESSION
With ten critically acclaimed
albums, a 16-track “best of” released on his own label and a
hard-to-beat catalogue, Darden Smith is a compelling performer
with an international fan base.
The Texan singer/songwriter
will be appearing at The State Bar in
Glasgow
on Friday, February 26 in a keenly-anticipated Fallen Angels Club
promotion.
Rock, pop, country are all
featured in Austin-based Darden’s music and his most recent
release, “After All This Time: The Best of Darden Smith,” is
an enchanting 16-song collection chronicling what No Depression
called “the restless stylistic evolution” of “an artist
beyond category.”
His
Glasgow
gig will help him celebrate his 25th year as a professional but
the musician says: “I’m more excited about music now than
I’ve ever been - and there’s no end to it.”
Kevin Morris of The Fallen
Angels Club, now in its sixth year, said: “This is a man who has
won respect from musicians, the business and fans for a long time.
“It’s a pleasure to
welcome him to
Glasgow
– it should be a great gig.”

BATTLEFIELD BAND EDINBURGH/GLASGOW SHOWS
NEW ALBUM ZAMA
ZAMA
This album started as a collection of songs and
tunes about gold. But
as we searched, like the alchemists of old, it turned into a wider
idea. In the process
we saw the greed, disasters and victories inherent in the search
and exploitation of various sources of wealth in this world.
Then, as if by demonic serendipity, along comes
the worldwide economic crisis.
We watched the major banks, insurance companies and Hedge
Funds etc., implode, discrediting the entire financial system and
many of its managers and advisers - But there was still more to
come. We, in Britain,
could only stand and watch aghast as many, (too many) Members of
Parliament, and the House of Lords at Westminster, ‘the Mother
of Parliaments’ were exposed for their cynical misuse of the
expenses system, often amounting to fraud.

QUALITY
ACTS LINED UP FOR INTIMATE CONCERT VENUE IN AYR
The
Fallen Angels Club has lined up six first-class shows in November
and December at Libertine in
Ayr
, the Club’s first gigs in the town. With a capacity of only 60,
Libertine creates a “house concert” vibe of intimacy with a
more personal and private atmosphere between performers and the
audience.
Nashville-based
and Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Jon Vezner leads the
way on November 3 to be followed by a quality selection of acts
– Dick Gaughan (November 5); Boo Hewerdine (November 18); Roddy
Hart (November 22); and Martin Stephenson on December 3.
The
Fallen Angels Club has staged many up-close-and-personal concerts
in
Glasgow
and elsewhere over the past five years and Libertine is a welcome
addition to its circuit of venues.
House
concerts are catching on here in
Scotland
but I want to create that ambiance at Libertine as much as
possible.
We
are delighted that the opening show list is real quality with
artistes who are well respected and widely admired for the style
and range of their music.
With
Michael Marra already confirmed for next spring Libertine will
grow from strength to strength.
Wednesday,
18th November - Boo Hewerdine
Sunday,
22nd November - Roddy Hart
Thursday,
3rd December - Martin Stephenson

Boston
’s
Crooked Still Line Up For Scottish Tour
Crooked
Still perform one of the most compelling forms of alternative
bluegrass and string band music today.
This
Boston
based quintet led by lead vocalist Aoife O'Donovan with Dr.Gregory
Liszt: banjo (Bruce Springsteen’s acoustic band) Corey DiMario:
Double bass, tenor guitar, Brittany Haas: Fiddle and cellist
Tristan Clarridge were describes as "the most important folk
group to emerge from
Boston
since the early 60's"(Boston Globe),
After
original cellist Rushad Eggleston left the group in late 07 the
solid foundation they built as a group earned them invitations
from huge events like the historic
Newport
and Telluride Festivals. Crooked Still are now on the cusp of a
new musical chapter.
And
the genre-bending sound this young band create will be explosive. "Crooked
Still's vision of string band and bluegrass music sounds like
nobody else's... they play their instruments gorgeously, radiating
warmth and [a] deep love of the music
and songs they play. Aoife O'Donovan has a voice of rare, stunning
purity and clarity." - Sing Out!
